Max Spoon

Max face 1-14-16

Temporary Name:

Max

Max is 70 pounds of personality in a 7 pound kitty shape. He came to us completely unable to see, and terrified of humans, but within a week he became a happy, outgoing little dude. He’s friendly and demanding, always following people around and asking cuddles. Hint: He likes to be carried around, draped over your right shoulder, not your left. Apparently there’s a difference 🙂

Gender: Male
Color: Black & White
Fur: Short
Born: Approximately 8/28/15
Mother: Spoon

Currently available for adoption!

I put off trapping these kittens as long as possible so they had as much time with mom as possible, but one day I realized this little guy couldn’t see at all because of the crusty goop covering his eyes. In fact, I didn’t even have to trap him–I just walked quietly up to him and grabbed him.

But within days of regular eye washes, he and his siblings were doing so much better, and being socialized to indoors with humans. They all picked up litter box and food/water bowls immediately. And Max led the charge to take over the house.

He loves to wrestle with his brother or chase his sister around, but his newest passion is trailing around after a people and meowing loudly to get picked up. He has a huge purr and within 1.8 seconds of being picked up, his motor is going full blast!

Health History

9/26/15 – When we first trapped these kittens, Max’s eyes were crusted and gooped completely closed. Within days, his eyes were clear and his eyelids were healing. He was left with a slight rumble in his chest which makes him have a coughing spell from time to time. If it persists, we’ll have to bring him in to our vet to have it addressed.

11/23/15 – Max got very sick very quickly, and we spent several weeks in and out of the vet trying to get him back on his feet. We think a brief case of general worms knocked out his immune system, giving him a sinus infection and and digestive issues, which made it hard to get better. With a lot of TLC, good food, medicine, and probiotics, we’re mostly back to normal. But because he was sick for several weeks at a critical time, he’s smaller than his siblings. He’s still as cuddly and bossy as ever though!

12/15/15 – Max was neutered and give his 1-year rabies vaccine. He’s officially available to adopt!

2/15/16 – Update: Max finally kicked the funk and the snotty issues, and he’s super healthy. He has almost caught up with his sister in size, and he’s a solid little boy. This kid is ready to go!

Pax has a cute face 9-30-15

Temporary Name:

Pax

Pax is named after the Roman goddess of peace because she is a calm, peaceful, sweet girl. She loves to wrestle with her brothers, but she’s just as happy entertaining herself, or just having a nap. She starts off a little shy, but she loves being scritched and combed, and turns into a happy melty kitten in your lap for “spa time”.

Gender: Female
Color: Black & White
Fur: Short
Born: Approximately 8/28/15

Currently available for adoption!

Pax was the healthiest of the three babies when she arrived. She also loved napping the most. While her brothers are wrestling and falling all over the place, she is usually playing on her own happily, or joining them until she’s sick of the rough and tumble.

She currently needs a little patience, but she’s 80% socialized. She doesn’t like loud noises but has gotten used to our dog (and the yelling at the football games on TV, haha). Once you pick her up and she realizes you’re just going to pet her, she totally relaxes and starts purring like mad. She loves other cats, napping, her food, and her brothers… possibly in that order.

Health history:

9/26/15 – When we first trapped these kittens, her brothers had goopy / crusty eyes which cleared up within 36 hours of treatment, but she had perfectly clear eyes and no health issues.

2/15/16 – Health update: The kitty flu that whipped through our house barely affected Pax. She has some reoccurring drippy eyes which may come back from time to time, but other than that she continues to be healthy as a horse!

Paulie sleeping, 9-16-15

Temporary Name:

Paulie

Gender: Male
Color: Grey Tabby
Fur: Short
Born: Approximately 5/1/15

Adopted!

When Paulie first arrived in the colony at the end of August, I thought he was a she and I called her Polly. In getting her fixed and checked for a microchip, we found out she was a he, and changed it to Paulie. He is an insanely cute little grey tabby boy, and although he’s skinny right now, has the potential to grow up into a big throw pillow cat. His fur is so soft and almost feels double thick. He’s also very talkative!

Although I originally thought he was a lost or abandoned kitten, in getting to know him I feel like he’s had minimal interaction with people so far. But he is a pretty relaxed dude who seems fascinated by people and living indoors. He loves toys, and he really loves to cuddle other cats. He instantly starts to purr when you pick him up. We’re working on getting him used to snuggles. He like to lay next to you, but he’s not sure laying ON you is such a great idea yet.

He suffered from sores or wounds on his paws. Although we believe the condition is in permanent remission, he should probably be watched for a few more weeks. Right now he is sleeping a lot, and eating even more. He’s at that age where he’s growing like a weed, and he started out kind of skinny so he’s catching up.

He adores ping pong balls, and any kind of dangly toys. He’s taken to our cat trees and likes to sleep in the top perches, preferably upside down and stretched out. So far he seems to like all other cats and is happy to make friends and cuddle with any cats. And he isn’t bothered by our dog. He’s quite independent but is very social and would probably do best in a house with another chill cat.

Health history:

8/26/15 – Neutered and given vaccines (rabies, FIV, FeL, etc.) at No More Homeless Pets. He was treated as a stray/feral, so he was also ear-tipped.

9/8/15 – Vet visit. Received check up and long-lasting antibiotics to treat his feet. [He suffered briefly from what we can only guess is something called ‘pillow foot’ (Plasma Cell Pododermatitis). It is an autoimmune disorder that vets don’t know enough about yet. It’s not a disease, but likely something triggered by stress. It’s where the immune system goes weird and attacks the pads of the paws causing them to swell and rupture. He was treated and bounced back amazingly well. There’s not reason to believe it will ever come back.]

9/20/15 – After a great consult with a specialist, we’re happy to conclude Paulie probably didn’t have ‘pillow foot’ after all. He likely had a reaction to the stress of being trapped and having surgery, and then being brought indoors. He’s pretty much healed up and ready to meet people finally!

Yoshi in sunlight 8-6-15

Temporary Name:

Yoshi, (a.k.a.) The Paw

Gender: Female
Color: White with black
Fur: Short
Born: Approximately 5/10/15
Mom: Magnolia
Family: 4 kittens

Yoshi is a sweet, playful girl who is looking for a special family to be patient with her. Quite a few all- or mostly-white cats have hearing or vision deficits, and we suspect she might have minor hearing loss. She does have an extra thumb on her right paw, and wonderful markings!

She had been on hold for a late adoption, but that fell through recently, so she is back on the adoptable list.

Currently available for adoption!

Yoshi was the fourth of four kittens we caught at our neighbor’s condemned house. She has amazing markings, and was one of the biggest and healthiest of her litter. She is also the feistiest, and we’re working hard to socialize her to humans. She’s very playful, has taken to the litter box quickly, and loves tasty wet cat food.

She has a tiny additional thumb, complete with tiny claw, on her right paw, giving her a subtle mitten look to that paw. She has a fondness for large, fuzzy, older female cats, and also loves to play with anyone willing to chase and wrestle. In her months with us waiting for her adoptive family (which unfortunately got canceled), she has grown into an exceptionally gorgeous little lady, with lush double-thick fur remarkably like her mother’s.

Health history:

Several of Yoshi’s litter mates had slightly crusty eyes. We didn’t see anything abnormal about her eyes but cleaned them for the first two days she was with us. Otherwise she seems fairly healthy.

8/20/15 – Yoshi was spayed and given her rabies vaccine at No More Homeless Pets.

Note: Yoshi needs a patient family. We haven’t been able to have her professionally evaluated, but we feel she may have some hearing loss issues. This is not abnormal for all- or mostly-white cats. She needs a patient family willing to help her adjust to a new home and new people since she is sensitive to sudden movements or unexpected attempts to pet her.

Gender: Female
Color: Black & white
Fur: Short
Born: Approximately 5/10/15
Mom: Magnolia
Family: 4 kittens

Available for Adoption

Yes, Steve is a girl. We were picking temporary names, and I wanted to call her Kiki but it was pointed out her sisters were Katana and Kawaii, and having three K kittens was weird. So I jokingly called her Steve and it stuck.

She and her sister Katana were the first two kittens we caught, and they’re so rambunctious and playful, they’re having no trouble being socialized. Steve is the second smallest of The Littles, and she loves to play and climb. She is doesn’t seem to be afraid of very much right now, and is learning to like cuddles.

Health history:

Several of Steve’s litter mates had slightly crusty eyes. We didn’t see anything abnormal about her eyes but cleaned them for the first two days she was with us. Otherwise she seems fairly healthy.

Update 8/27/15: Steve was officially adopted by her new family, and especially likes her new fluffy fur-buddy friend. Her new name is Nami, and she is adored by her new hoomans!

Update 3/3/16: Life is challenging and things didn’t work out with her new people for the long term. This happens. But Steve doesn’t understand. She is home here with us and a little depressed. After a few weeks of unwinding and evaluation, she should be ready to meet new people and maybe have a furever home this time.

Jane, 5-20-15

Temporary Name:

Jane

Sweet Jane is a quiet lady that needs a peaceful home — preferably with a sunny windowsill, an occasional warm lap, and a food bowl all her own. Despite her rough life on the street, she’s a gentle, timid little girl that’s very polite.

Gender: Female
Color: Brown Tabby & white
Fur: Short
Born: Fall 2012 (estimated)

Mom: Unknown, possibly Mushka
Family: At least 1 litter of kittens (Batman, Valentina, Sushi, Moneypenny)

Available for adoption.

Teen Jane 6-16-13
Jane as a teenager, probably pregnant already

We originally met Jane as a young teen mom who showed up at our colony, pregnant and hungry. Based on age and behavior, my best guess is that she is the daughter of one of our original colony members, Mushka. A few months later she brought her kittens to our front porch. We managed to catch all four kittens and mom, and bring them inside. I got her spayed through Operation Catnip, and as soon as she was done nursing, we slowly transitioned her to being an outside cat again because she was unhappy inside.

It was heartbreaking to watch her survive on the streets. She tried desperately to find a place in our colony, but she was small and passive, and became the lowest kitty on the pecking order. Everyone picked on her, and more often than not, she would spend her days living in the storm drains to keep out of reach of more aggressive cats.

And then she disappeared for a little over a week. We were getting ready to go out with friends on a Saturday when I happened to look outside and see her hunched in the grass across the street. Seeing her condition, the fact that I easily picked her up and carried her inside, I canceled all plans and took her to our vet immediately. After an exam and blood tests, he supported my instant assessment. Chances are she was trapped in our hoarding neighbor’s house for a week without food or much water. He suggested we keep her inside for a few weeks with a lot of TLC to see if she bounced back.

Jane loves windowsills 10-18-15
Jane loves windowsills 10-18-15

And boy, did she bounce back. After a few days of sleeping and eating a cat food slurry, she started to amble around the house and make noses with other cats. Within weeks she was the absolute happiest cat I’ve ever met. It was like she was in Disney World every day. She loved being picked up and snuggled. She loved being fed. She loved finding a new place to nap. She found a spot in the hallway to sit where she could pop out and sniff all of the cats that went by. She liked to lay next to the dog and let him snuffled all over her head.

We are sure if she returned to the outside life, she would probably be more assertive in the colony now that she’s found her inner strength. But she is a small cat and very sweet, and if we could place her in a good home, it would mean one less vulnerable cat on the streets. And Jane is a small, undemanding kitty that wants only a sunny windowsill, a food bowl, and someone to talk to her.

Health history:

7/11/13 – Jane brought her kittens to us. We managed to catch all four kittens and her, and brought them inside.

7/31/13 – Jane went through an Operation Catnip clinic to be spayed and get her vaccines.

4/4/15 – Jane arrived after being gone over a week, looking very ill. An emergency vet visit and some fluids later, and we decided to keep her inside beyond her two week recovery period.

Overall, Jane is a healthy cat. She’s still young enough to be playful, but for the most part, she’s very calm. She is now getting a little chubbier around the middle than she’s ever been.

Moxie

She's getting better, 7-10-15
She’s getting better, 7-10-15

Moxie

Moxie is the victorious survivor of a hoarding situation, and she has come a long way towards a normal life. Although she (understandably) has anxiety issues around other cats, she adores her humans and is amazingly affectionate. She will do best in a home without other cats, or with just one relaxed animal. And she prefers women over men, but is wonderfully affectionate in either case. When you get to know Moxie, you can see her dealing with her issues every day, and she is an amazing example of someone who decided to overcome her tragic past.

Gender: Female
Color: Black & white
Fur: Short
Born: Unknown (estimated 2011)

Available for adoption.

Moxie came to us from a sad hoarding/neglect situation and was completely emaciated. When I took her in to the next Operation Catnip clinic, they wanted to euthanize her immediately, but I managed to talk her into another chance. The mission was to fatten her up enough to have spay surgery and her shots.

It has been a long, uphill struggle to get her better, but she is a truly amazing cat with a phenomenal personality. She loves to cuddle and talk, and is very people-oriented. We found out she had already been spayed at some point, so we’re working under the assumption that she had been someone’s pet already.

In our journey towards getting Moxie fatter and healthier, we have also been working with her anxiety and social skills. She has come a long way but will likely need a home with few animals and probably no kids. She prefers women, and will even ask for attention form women visitors she has just met. But she will tolerate a guy roommate as a second best option 🙂

We also discovered she loves the red laser dot game.

Health History

When Moxie arrived at our door, she was too skinny to even tell where her organs were, what to speak of attempt to spay her. Over the course of time, we brought her back to a healthy weight, and have a firm grasp on her anxiety issue (all of which came from being in a hoarding house). When she is stressed, she loses weight and anxiety-grooms, but in a relaxed environment she really starts to blossom.

5/17/15 – Operation Catnip. Unsuccessful. Initially too emaciated to do spay surgery on, we have been working to get her fat enough to have surgery and vaccines.

5/19/15 – General check up with vet. Moxie weighed 4.5 pounds (normal weight is 7 to 8 pounds)

6/11/15 – Vet weigh-in at 5.25 pounds!

6/30/15 – Roundworm treatment (and whole house of cats).

7/3/15 – Vet weigh-in at 4.75 pounds after roundworm illness and treatment.

8/18/15 – Moxie weighed in at 6.5 pounds is cleared for surgery.

8/20/15 – At NMHP: Operation petsnip we discovered she was already spayed. She did get her rabies vaccine.

Temporary Charlie

Charlie sleeping, 5-9-15

Charlie profileTemporary Name:

Temporary Charlie

Gender: Male
Color: Black & White
Fur: Short
Born: Approximately 4/17/14
Mom: Lil Mamma
Family: 6 kittens

Currently available for adoption.

Charlie was the smallest of the litter. A little crusty-eyed kitten that could barely compete for a milky nipple. Of course I’m a sucker for the underdog (undercat?). In the first week of holding them and cleaning their crusty eyes three to four times a day, he broke my heart. Not only did he have such a hard time with being tiny and crusty, but he started to have a personality, and he reminded me so much of Tom, a neighborhood cat that had passed away only a few months before.

He has a very large and lanky frame making him quite a big boy. And he has the short, black and white, coarse fur that makes him seem aerodynamic and almost waterproof. Before I knew he was a boy, I told him he had better be a guy because of the distinct mustache and soul patch on his face. Fortunately he has turned into quite the goofy, cuddly, sweetheart. He loves to talk and purr, and he has the sweet, gentle-giant voice that I knew and loved in Tom.

Charlie (as in Charlie Chaplin mustache, right?) is sweet and playful. He’ll probably do best in a house as an only cat, but he doesn’t seem to mind dogs. He just wants all of your kitty attention for himself. He’s looking like he’s going to be a giant throw pillow of a cat – sweet, mellow, and talkative.

Update 10-21-14: We’re learning to wear a collar now and don’t seem to mind it that much!

Update 4-7-15: Charlie lived up to his ‘Temporary Charlie’ name. After a few months, he came back from his adoptive house. After talking with the family and observing him back home with us for a few weeks, we’re confident that he’ll be successful in a new home now. He needs more attention than he was getting, and he would probably be happier as an only cat because he wants to be the center of your world 🙂 Probably not a good roommate for another dominant male cat.

Health history:

8/27/14 – Neutered, rabies vaccine, flea/parasite treatment, and microchipped. (No More Homeless Pets: Operation Petsnip, www.nmhp.net)

When these kittens came to us, they had very crusty eyes. It took a good week or two to get that under control. This little boy hasn’t shown signs of any returning issues.

When we first went out to bring these kittens in from our neighbor’s yard, we thought there were five and called it a day when we got five kittens. An hour later our neighbor came over to say there was a sixth kitten. An elusive sixth kitten that has proven to be fast and smart.

She’s the first to go charging into new territory, and the first to jump up and demand to be cuddled. She is her own person who will probably go into a new home to make it her kingdom, conquering with cuteness and a velvet paw. Despite being headstrong and demanding, she is a huge cuddle bug who will stop at nothing to be in the middle of the action. I’ve fallen in love with the sassy way she flicks her tail (a black tail with an adorable white tip!) when she’s trying to get your attention. And she is so people friendly that she will crawl up into your face to sniff your breath if something gets her attention.

This little girl is the ringleader of her siblings, and always has been.
